Baby Boomers

There is no widespread agreement about the names and definitions of generations but if we say that Baby Boomers born between 1946-1966 are in their 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s. Almost half have retired but almost a third are still working full-time. 62% own their home outright – this is 3xs the home ownership rate of their kids (27% of Gen X own their home outright)*. Compared with previous generations at this age, Baby Boomers are healthier, more active, better educated and have higher expectations. They get frustrated when wrongly stereotyped as old and unadventurous. Women feel 13 years younger than their actual age – and feel much younger than their mothers felt at the same age.

I’m Fiona the Baby Boomer and I might be retired, but I live a full and busy life.

I love a day trip in the car and just this month, I had a weekend away up the coast. Why not? I say. I don’t have to worry about the 9 to 5 grind anymore. I’m free and financially stable. But that doesn’t mean I’m frivolous with my money. I prefer to invest in things with a safe return. And at my age, it’s smart to be well insured. Home insurance, car insurance, travel insurance, I’m insured up the wazoo.

I'm a bit of a whizz in the kitchen

I’m a bit of a whizz in the kitchen if I do say so myself, and people often compliment me on my cooking. From classic Sunday roasts to modern Australian, I know my way around a recipe although I am having to cut back on the butter a bit these days since I'm concerned about my cholesterol level. A low-fat diet is now a way of life and I prefer to eat healthy snacks but that doesn’t mean things can’t taste good. The Women’s Weekly always has a recipe or two that meets my needs in that department which is handy because I’m the one who usually buys groceries.

I love a bit of gardening and often pop to the hardware store. I love it when my roses are in bloom.

I can't go past the odd spot of shopping

I like to look stylish and can’t go past the odd spot of shopping. I fancy a browse through speciality shops and department stores equally. The Weekly is a great source of inspiration for the latest looks for ladies of leisure like me.
